Get Involved

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Helen Keller

The best way to feel connected to our community here at East Shore is to get involved.  By getting involved, you have the opportunity to get to know other members more deeply, and to express your ideas, skills and talents, while contributing to the well-being of the community.

Opportunities abound, ranging from regular social events and groups, to volunteering on a Sunday or at one off events, to joining teams and committees working on specific projects. When you find something that interests you, just ask to be introduced to the leader of that group, or contact them directly.

“You are never too small to make a difference.”

BECOME A LEADER

“I’ve benefited so much from each and every one of my leadership roles. From Board President to OWL facilitator, my experiences have been opportunities for personal growth and increased connection to our community. My identity as a UU has deepened as I become more involved.”

    Beth Wilson, Member since 2000

If you’re interested in developing your personal skills and/or potentially becoming a future leader at East Shore, there are many opportunities to learn through doing. By getting involved with various teams and committees, you’ll have an opportunity to make a difference in areas you care about.

At the same time, you’ll learn more about:

    • how the church functions (policies, procedures, culture, staff roles etc.)
    • the members of this congregation (their skills, interests, and lives)

Plus you’ll have opportunities to practice a wide range of skills including:

    • organizing events (eg. Women’s Perspective, Auction, Seabeck),
    • creative or artistic skills, (eg. Sacred stitches, Campus aesthetics)
    • public speaking, (eg. testimonials, Worship services)
    • teaching children or adults (eg. RE, OWL, Adult education),
    • relationship building (Right Relations, covenant creation, Covenant circles)
    • volunteer management (eg. running events, hospitality)

In addition, the UUA, our national organization, offers many affordable online training courses to help you develop specific skills and awareness. When you join a team or committee, the leaders of that team can direct you to the most relevant training, if you are interested in developing your skills further.

Finally, the Nominating Committee is tasked with identifying volunteers who are interested in and suitable for key positions within the church.
