On the last Saturday of every month, in February, March, April and May, join us for outdoor Saturday youth adventures. Each month will feature a different activity at a different location. And, on the second Sunday of each month, from 6-7pm, there will be an online planning session with volunteers and participants to get ready as a team. We ask that all interested youth attend the planning session. We’ll talk about equipment requirements, transportation, location, meals, and such. These events are open to any youth in our immediate and extended community, so you can invite a friend whether they’ve been to East Shore forever or haven’t been yet.

Our goal with this program is to build community through fun and engaging outdoor experiences with each other. Middle and high school youth, friends, and families are invited to join!

How did snowshoeing go? Read this and more below, and be sure to check out the photo album to see what fun was had! As we approached the parking lot, youth were saying it was more fun than they expected and others said they want to do it again. What better reviews could we expect?

Join the info and planning night for Geocaching event on Sunday, March 14 via Zoom 6:00 pm-7:00 pm Zoom meeting Link Meeting ID: 842 5667 0954

On March 27 we will gather near East Lake Sammamish Parkway in Issaquah to try our new skills at finding Geocaches!

What is geocaching?

It is a world-wide scavenger hunt with millions of locations just waiting to be found. It can take you to places right near your home or anywhere! Caches can be found in cities, forests, lakes, mountains – anywhere! There are many types of caches – traditional, multi, puzzle, earth, virtual, and more! Some are quite easy and others can be very challenging. Each cache is ranked on a scale 1-5 on a level of difficulty and level or terrain! You can “geocache” solo or with a partner or with many others! You can do it for FREE!!!

Your homework before that evening is to think up your geocaching name. If you want to get a head start on learning more – go to geocaching.com to view the website, download the app, and launch your profile!

Also, there are lots of videos you can watch to get more hints about this wonderful adventure!

If you have questions, please contact geocaching host Peggy Phillips

Please confirm participation by Monday March 22. You can sign up here to attend or email Amanda Alice directly.

Please indicate who will be coming from your crowd and ages, all of the email contacts who want to receive updates and info, and everyone’s cells that will be joining. We’ll use cell phone numbers for contacting the group a day or two ahead of time and for on-location logistics and emergencies.

Have I got your interest or curiosity?

I sure hope so! My husband, Mike and I have become quite fond of geocaching. We do it everywhere we go. He is much better at solving puzzles.

Wait – I am getting ahead of myself. First – simple explanation! Using navigational coordinates of latitude and longitude and an application on your phone or GPS – you find geocaches – traditionally -containers hidden at those coordinates. Inside the traditional cache, you will find, at a minimum, a “log” or piece of paper, to write your “name” and date. That tells the owner of the cache – you found it!!

Now, what “name” do you write? Your geocaching name, of course! It is your chance to pick a fun name for yourself. I am RaptorQueen – because we have a camper that is a “Raptor” model and of course, I am the Queen. Mike is RaptorKing350 – similar reason plus we have a Ford 350 truck that pulls the camper! You can be much more creative if you wish.

The fun part is that many of these geocaches can be hidden in “plain sight” and camouflaged to look like something else. The “owner” or person who placed the cache, often takes you to a particular spot because it is special to them or because they want you to see something special. Or….maybe they want to challenge your “attention to details” and hunting skills. There are many reasons.

After you find the cache and write your name, using your app – you log your find! Once you “log your find” on line – you now have a smiley face on the app in the place where the cache is shown.

More Information

Although the events themselves are free, sometimes the activities will require appropriate gear and clothing. And for that, we have funds available! Please get in touch with DRE, Amanda Alice, to help make sure you’ve got the money you need to cover the costs.

All of the events require your own transportation, because of the pandemic we’re not able to coordinate that or ride share. And of course, you’ll need to bring masks, hand sanitizer, and to avoid physical contact with one another.
