Fourth Wednesday Book Club: The Hazelbourne Ladies Motorcycle and Flying Club

Join us as we discuss The Hazelbourne Ladies Motorcycle and Flying Club, by Helen Simonson. This book explores the frustrations experienced by women who were gainfully (and happily) employed during wartime, only to be told that their services are no longer needed and that they should return their focus to marriage and child-bearing. Set in England in the year following the end of World War I. Constance comes to the seaside town as companion to a frail elderly woman. She is greeted warmly by a vivacious young woman from a wealthy family. This young woman wears trousers, operates a taxi and delivery service to employ local women, and manages a ladies’ motorcycle club. She and her friends welcome Constance into their circle, despite the differences in their stations.
