In past eras, articulations of reproductive freedom or “Reproductive Rights” rooted in mainstream culture, were legal-centric.  They focused primarily on the establishment of reproductive choice arguments that hinged on Constitution-sanctioned access.  The 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade as a matter of “settled law” showed that a different standard must now be applied to insure not only women’s choice, women’s health, and women’s body autonomy, but also women’s access to comprehensive networks of support, education, and services so that the communities they (and their families) inhabit can thrive. This learning engagement is meant to offer an introductory exploration Reproductive Justice as a broader, more comprehensive notion of “law,” in conjunction with the larger issues of human procreation, human agency, human rights, and human liberation.

For many years, reproductive practices of Black, indigenous, and other Peoples of Color have recognized social, cultural, and community-positive dimensions by acknowledging how women and men in marginalized spaces—and subject to State reproductive regulation, control, and surveillance—have been called to respond to their oppressive socio-economic conditions by centering a wider range of human needs, aspirations, and circumstances.  Is it possible to use this human-centric perspective to forge a new way to understand and support people’s decisions to have children, NOT have children, or raise children under circumstances in which they can flourish?  Come listen, dialogue, and find out.
