The Second Sunday Recipient for January will be Open Doors. Open Doors for Multicultural Families is a nonprofit, charitable organization dedicated to ensuring that families who have family members with developmental disabilities and special health care needs have equal access to culturally and linguistically appropriate information, resources and services. Open Doors promote culturally competent services through community collaboration, training and partnerships.
The families served by Open Doors are often immigrants, refugees, and/or people of color. They accomplish this using a “cultural brokering” model. Open Doors staff come from the same culture and speaks the same language as the families they serve, and so are able to communicate with the family in their own language, and in a way that will make sense within their cultural context.
