Join us as we welcome Sul ka dub Freddie Lane, member of the Lummi Nation. The Lummi House of Tears Carvers are back on the move, transporting a hand-carved totem pole more than 6,500 miles to help protect Oak Flat. This land is sacred to tribes like the Hopi, Zuni, Yavapai and O’odham and is at risk of being destroyed during mining operations on one of the largest untapped copper deposits in North America. We welcome Freddie in the spirit of solidarity, healing, honor, hospitality, and respect.

Grades K-3 Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education

East Shore Unitarian Church 12700 SE 32nd Street, Bellevue, WA

Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education for Grades K–3 is an eight-workshop class that helps children begin the lifelong process of acquiring information and forming attitudes and values about identity, relationships, safety and health. Unlike many other sexuality curricula currently available, this program is comprehensive and progressive. In an inclusive and developmentally appropriate manner, it addresses sensitive topics that are typically excluded. Although the curriculum was developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ, this course is completely secular and free of specific religious doctrine or reference. However, the underlying values of the program reflect the justice-oriented traditions of both denominations.

Democracy and its Alternatives

Online Event

What characteristics do democracies share? How do they differ? And what can alternatives to democracy—namely, authoritarianism and dictatorship—teach us about democracy itself? This course is American politics, comparative politics, international relations, and political theory rolled into one, touching on everything from Jean-Jacques Rousseau's social contract theory to Europe's sovereign debt crisis in 2007. It is an effort to understand democracy from all available angles—in theory and in practice, from ancient Greece to revolutionary America—the good and the bad, its present and its future.
