The Power of Thought Experiments

Online Event

Have you ever wondered what it means to be immortal? Or how you would act in a life-or-death situation? Or what would happen if you could travel back in time? In The Power of Thought Experiments, award-winning philosopher Daniel Breyer of Illinois State University takes you around the world and across intellectual traditions to explore the power of thought experiments. And, critically, you won’t simply learn about influential thought experiments throughout history, you’ll work through them in your own thinking, question them, challenge them, and evaluate what power they have to expand our minds and inform our lives. Covenant of the Salmon People: Film and Discussion

East Shore Unitarian Church 12700 SE 32nd Street, Bellevue, WA, United States

Produced in collaboration with the Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) Tribe, Covenant of the Salmon People is a 60-minute film exploring how the Nimiipuu people’s relationship to salmon has shaped them. As the oldest documented civilization in North America, the Nimiipuu date back over 16,000 years to a creation story that is an agreement to protect salmon and speak on their behalf. The covenant with salmon is woven into Nimiipuu culture, history, and now their modern-day species restoration work. This covenant is being impacted by the widespread construction of dams across Nimiipuu traditional lands, prompting questions: Will the work of the Nimiipuu be enough? How can we help?

Blue Christmas

East Shore Unitarian Church 12700 SE 32nd Street, Bellevue, WA, United States

For many of us, the Holiday season is filled with wonder, a spirit of generosity, and joyful anticipation of gathering with friends and family. And for many of us the Holidays can also be filled with sadness, stress, anxiety, and/or “the blues,” especially if you are grieving the recent loss of a loved one, or suffering being estranged from family, dealing with difficult health issues, or feeling disconnected and lonely. Perhaps the very pressure of having to make holiday preparations is making you feel overwhelmed. For people who are grieving and who are suffering, this forced joyfulness during the Holidays can be painful. Many of us just need a break, a contemplative space where we can slow down, connect with community, accept where we are, and honor our emotional needs. Whatever the reason for feeling blue or overwhelmed, we invite you to join us in creating a peaceful virtual spiritual oasis. Wear your favorite ugly Xmas sweater or your comfy PJ’s, as we offer ourselves the gift of self-compassion. We’ll create an informal and cozy atmosphere where we can share inspirational readings, joys & sorrows, and brief guided meditations. Everyone is welcome!
